Most stage wins in the Tour de France

The record for the most stage wins in the Tour de France is currently shared by two greats: Merckx and Cavendish. However, the Brit is doing everything he can to leave Merckx behind. Cavendish's "farewell" Tour in 2023 was all about his 35th stage victory, but he only managed to secure an impressive second place. Due to a crash, he had to leave the Tour early. Let's try again in 2024, shall we? With Morkov, he's got the best lead-out at his disposal.

Hinault (28) and Leducq (25) are third and fourth on this list. Kittel (14) and Sagan (12) also have an impressive track record in the Tour. Among the active riders in the peloton, Pogacar (11) is next in line.

Notable performances

In 2020, Pogacar became the youngest stage winner in the Tour de France since Lance Armstrong in 1993. The youngest Tour stage winner ever is Fabio Battesini, who won a stage at age 19 in 1931. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the good old Woods, who won the stage at Puy-de-Dôme last year at the age of 36. The oldest winner of a Tour de France stage ever is Pino Cerami (41).

Sean Kelly holds the record for the most top-10 finishes (119!), followed by Leducq and Zabel (111). Merckx is at 106 and Zoetemelk at 105. Among the names that often finished in the top 10, there are a few riders who have never won a Tour de France stage, including Hector Tiberghien (50), Gilbert Desmet (44), and José Joaquin Rojas (35).

Then we've got to zoom in on the riders in their rainbow jersey. Alaphilippe was the last world champion to win a stage in the Tour in 2021. Dumoulin managed to do so in the time trial in 2018, and before that, it was Sagan in 2016. It was Sagan’s seventh (!) stage win in the Tour in the rainbow jersey, which is also the record. Can Mathieu van der Poel win a stage in his rainbow jersey in his third Tour participation?

And finally, we're taking a look at the Italians. They haven't been doing so well in France for years, since Nibali's last stage win in 2019. The Portuguese have experienced an even longer stage win drought, since 2013. It's up to Almeida, Ciccone, and Bettiol to make their countries proud again in this Tour.

Trilogy: stage wins in the three Grand Tours

No fewer than 108 riders have already won a stage in all three Grand Tours. The most recent additions to that list are Pogacar and Alaphilippe, thanks to their stage wins in this year's Giro. In last year's Tour, no one completed the trilogy; the last rider to do so in the Tour de France was Mohoric, in the 2021 edition. Before that, it was Sam Bennett, in the 2020 Tour. Simon Yates, Ewan, and Viviani completed their trilogy in the 2019 Tour.

What about the Tour of 2024? Which riders have the chance to complete their trilogy? We still have to rely on a provisional start list, but these are the names for now:

On to another Tour with beautiful stage win records!
