Tour victories

Excluding Lance Armstrong's seven voided victories, five is the magic number for the Tour de France. Hinault, Merckx, Anquetil, and Indurain each won the Tour five times, arguably the greatest achievement in cycling. Froome stands alone with four wins, while LeMond, Bobet, and Thys each donned the yellow jersey three times.

Miguel Indurain is the only rider in this elite group to win five consecutive Tours, from 1991 to 1995. Merckx and Anquetil won four consecutive editions, and Froome and Hinault won three in a row. This year, Visma - Lease a Bike's Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard could join them by aiming for his third consecutive Tour victory, despite some doubts about his fitness.

Hinault was also the last Frenchman to win the Tour in 1985. The Belgians have been waiting even longer, with their last win in 1976.

Tour Podiums

Raymond Poulidor, the eternal second, has stood on the final podium of the Tour de France the most often. He finished second three times and third five times. Hinault, with his five wins and two second places, has the most podium finishes after Poulidor, tied with Zoetemelk, who finished second six times. Ullrich, Garrigou, Anquetil, and Froome each stood on the podium six times as well. With four podiums in his first four appearances, Tadej Pogacar is quickly climbing this list. Five out of five seems imminent!

Top-10s

Zoetemelk and Poulidor are the kings of top-10 finishes in the Tour's general classification: Zoetemelk achieved twelve top-10 finishes, and Poulidor eleven. Lucien Van Impe, the last Belgian winner, has ten top-10 finishes. Other riders with many top-10s without ever winning the Tour include Agostinho (8), Valverde (7), Ockers (7), Bardet (6), Virenque (6), and Quintana (6).

Potential scenarios for 2024

What if...

  • Vingegaard wins? He would be the first rider since Froome to win three consecutive Tours.
  • Roglic wins? He would complete his career with victories in all three Grand Tours, joining Froome, Nibali, Contador, Hinault, Merckx, Gimondi, and Anquetil.
  • Pogacar wins? He would be the first rider since Pantani to win both the Giro and the Tour in the same season. Froome and Dumoulin were the last to podium in both.
  • Evenepoel wins? He would be the first Belgian winner since 1976 and win on his Tour debut, as Pogacar did in 2020. Vingegaard and Quintana finished second on their debuts.
